International Dog Day – August 26
ORANJESTAD – On International Dog Day, observed annually on August 26, the Department of Public Health (DVG) is reminding dog owners of their responsibility when purchasing or adopting a dog.
Adopting or purchasing a pet can bring great joy, but it is also a lifelong responsibility.
A dog is not a temporary gift or an animal that can simply be abandoned when circumstances change.
The Dog Ordinance uses the term “keeper.” This refers not only to the official owner, but also to the person who has the dog in their care. From the moment you take responsibility for a dog, you are responsible for its well-being and behavior.
Before getting a pet, it is important to carefully consider whether you have enough time, space, and financial resources for food, veterinary care, hygiene, supervision, and attention. Also consider what will happen when you travel, move, become ill, or experience a change in your financial situation.
Many animals end up on the streets because they are taken in without fully considering the responsibility involved. Preventing animal abandonment starts with making a thoughtful decision. If you are not ready for this responsibility, waiting is the wisest choice.
The government, through the Dog Control Center and, in the future, the Centro di Control di Cacho (Animal Shelter and Control Center), as well as the many animal welfare organizations on Aruba, help animals in need. However, this assistance can never replace the responsibility of the owner. Every pet that is properly protected and cared for is one less animal that could end up on the streets.
Legal basis:
Dog Ordinance, Article 1, definition of “keeper.” “The owner, keeper, or the person in whose care the dog is”
Be a responsible pet owner. Every responsible action can save a life. Show love, protect your pet’s well-being, and let us work together toward an Aruba without abandoned animals.
