Installation work group to boost commercial production of chicken eggs in Aruba.
ORANJESTAD - Recently, at the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Council of Ministers approved installing a working group that will focus on increasing the commercial production of chicken eggs in Aruba.
This working group includes the Department of Economic Affairs, Commerce and Industry, Santa Rosa (Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishery), and the Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DIP). The main goal is to develop an implementation plan to stimulate the commercial production of chicken eggs locally.
According to analysis by the Department of Economic Affairs, Commerce and Industry, the total consumption of chicken eggs was 4.8 million units in 2023. Of this total, local production is only 15%, and we import the remaining 85%. Hence, this significant reliance on imports in the chicken-egg market offers growth opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
In addition, a report by the Social-Economic Council in 2020 entitled Food Security in Aruba identified some challenges that hinder the development of this sector. The World Bank Group 2020 report entitled "Building Aruba's Food Security During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond". proposed a food security strategy to promote Aruba's local food production and sustainable economic development.
Based on these reports, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Communications, and Sustainable Development has drawn up a policy note to increase the commercial production of chicken eggs in Aruba. The economic sector of chicken eggs, referred to as a promising sector, is characterized by a strong dependence on imports.
The government prioritizes boosting the commercial production of chicken eggs to promote more economic activity in this industry. According to the Minister of Economic Affairs, Communications, and Sustainable Development, Geoffrey Wever, this will help reduce imports, resulting in less dependence on international markets and more food security.
The government will soon announce the first action of the policy to stimulate the commercial production of chicken eggs.
