Influenza is not just a cold. Protect yourself this season.

ORANJESTAD—The Infectious Diseases Department of the Department of Public Health has launched its annual flu vaccination campaign with the slogan "Inluenza is not just a cold."

This campaign aims to remind everyone that the flu isn't just a regular cold, but that it can lead to hospitalization due to serious complications and even death, especially in vulnerable groups.

Why is this important?
The flu leads to thousands of complications and deaths annually, many of which can be avoided with vaccination. Many people are unaware of it or underestimate its severity, thinking that the flu causes flu-like symptoms just like other viruses. It doesn't apply to everyone; a flu infection in someone in a risk group can be much more severe than in someone who isn't. Therefore, this campaign emphasizes the importance of timely vaccination to protect yourself if you are in a risk group.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Seniors (60+);
  • People with chronic illnesses or health problems such as asthma, diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, a weak immune system, etc.;
  • Caregivers and healthcare workers;
  • Children under 5 years old.

Where is the vaccine available?

Vaccinations are available at the Infectious Diseases Department from Monday to Friday, 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, via the walk-in system, and also in various neighborhoods, including:

  • Thursday, November 13, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, at the Frans Figaroa Stadium;
  • Friday, November 21, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, at the Playa Pabou Center;
  • Thursday, November 27, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, Santa Cruz Sports Hall.

To get vaccinated, citizens aged 60 and older only need to bring their AZV (Ambulance Service) card. Citizens under 60 with a chronic illness or in a risk group must bring a doctor's prescription and their AZV vaccination certificate.

Individuals who are not in a risk group but would like to be vaccinated can purchase one for Afl. 20.00. Starting November 24, 2025, between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM, you can visit the Infectious Diseases Department office at Avicenastraat 1. You can only pay for vaccines by debit card or bank transfer; DVG does not accept cash payments.

Healthcare providers and frontline workers can also be vaccinated at our department using their AZV vaccination certificate starting November 24, between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM.
