In Memoriam – Robert JeanD’or (1954–2025)

ORANJESTAD – With deep sadness and heavy hearts, the Department of Culture announces the passing of our beloved and legendary musician, Robert JeanD’or.

Robert JeanD’or was one of Aruba’s greatest cultural pillars—a man whose talent, humility, and lifelong dedication to music inspired countless generations. Over the course of more than 55 years, he built an extraordinary career that not only placed his name firmly on Aruba’s cultural map but also projected our island onto the international stage.

A Life in Music

From his early beginnings with dance rhythms on Radio Kelkboom, to his participation in renowned bands such as Blancas Palomitas, Los Juveniles, Los Lirios, The Boys, La Nueva Fuerza, and many others, Robert consistently demonstrated excellence. His artistry eventually led him to perform alongside international icons such as Johnny Ventura, Celia Cruz, Oscar D’León, Larry Harín, Bobby Harín, Bobby Valentín, Juando, Frankie Ruiz, Frankie Valentín, Juan Luis Guerra, and many more.

His music resonated across international stages. from Madison Square Garden in New York to festivals in Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Miami, and beyond. He recorded landmark albums with groups such as Hijos del Rey and El Gran Combo, and contributed to Johnny Ventura’s iconic El Caballo Mayor, as well as recordings with Juan Luis Guerra.

Upon returning to Aruba, Robert founded Robert and His Solo Band Show, which has thrived for over 30 years and remains a vibrant part of Aruba’s musical landscape.

Recognition and Tributes

Throughout his remarkable career, Robert JeanD’or received numerous honors and awards:

  • King of Tumba Aruba – Crowned a total of five times, including three consecutive years (1976, 1977, 1978) and later in 1990 and 1991, he cemented his place as one of the most influential composers and musicians in the history of Aruba’s Carnival.
  • Golden Creole Award (2023) – Honored with this prestigious lifetime achievement award by the Go Culture Foundation, presented by the Government of Aruba through the Minister of Culture, in recognition of his immense cultural and musical contributions and his role as an international cultural ambassador.
  • Government of Aruba Tributes – Over the years, Robert received multiple formal recognitions for his dedication and success in representing Aruba’s culture on the world stage.
  • Ambiente Awards (1992) – During this ceremony, Johnny Ventura personally traveled to Aruba to present Robert with a special recognition, highlighting his influential career in merengue and salsa.

Internationally, Robert was celebrated as one of the most respected musicians in merengue and salsa, admired by colleagues and audiences alike.

A Cultural Ambassador

Beyond his extraordinary talent, Robert JeanD’or was a true cultural ambassador for Aruba. With every performance, he proved that our small island has a powerful voice in the global world of music and culture. He inspired young musicians to dream bigger, and his legacy will continue to echo through every note of salsa, merengue, bolero, and tropical music that carries his spirit.

Farewell

The entire cultural and musical community of Aruba mourns his passing, while at the same time celebrating a life filled with talent, passion, and dedication.

The Department of Culture of Aruba extends its deepest condolences to his wife Vivian, his children, his family, friends, fellow musicians, and all who were touched by his life and music.
