Government Office illuminated in blue in support of the fight against child abuse

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - On Friday, April 12, 2024, the government illuminated its building with blue lights to show solidarity in the fight against child abuse.

The government's commitment is to protect the rights and well-being of every child living on our island.

Present at this ceremony were Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, Minister of Justice and Social Affairs Rocco Tjon, Minister of Finance and Culture Xiomara Maduro, various parliamentarians, the Respeta Mi Foundation, the Mi Voz ta Bo Voz Foundation, and Bureau Sostenemi. The public also wore blue as a sign of support for the fight against child abuse.

The government has increased punishments for child abuse and sexual abuse of children. In cases where the abuse has resulted in the death of the child, the perpetrator can receive a sentence of up to 24 years. The penalties for child abuse and sexual abuse of children in Aruba are among the most severe in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is essential to conduct thorough investigations, as this is crucial for imposing appropriate penalties. All stakeholders have the resources to prepare each case and thus expedite the deserved punishment for the perpetrator. The majority of child abuse cases involve the victim's family or circle of friends, despite the expectation that the government plays a larger role in the battle against abuse of this kind.

Prime Minister Wever-Croes emphasized that the government is playing its part, but the help of citizens is needed to combat child abuse. It is important to be alert to who is around the children and to watch for any signs that may indicate abuse. The most common forms of abuse in Aruba are neglect of the child, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse, 99% of which occur by people in the child's immediate environment.

Prime Minister Wever-Croes thanked all professionals in this field and recognized that it is a pressing and heavy task. Their essential work contributes to a healthier future for the youth of tomorrow, allowing Aruba to continue moving forward.
