Four Additional Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) Deployed in Aruba's Territorial Waters
ORANJESTAD – Four (4) additional Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) have recently been deployed in Aruba's territorial waters.
Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) are specially designed structures that attract a variety of fish species. By placing them closer to shore, local fishermen can increase their catch without having to travel farther out to sea or into more distant fishing grounds. This helps improve safety at sea while supporting more efficient fishing operations.
The four FADs, which were deployed on Monday, are located at the following sites:
- Zeewijk
- Sero Colorado
- Juana Morto
- Druif
These locations were selected in close consultation with the local fishing community and other relevant stakeholders to ensure they reflect the needs and practical experience of those whose livelihoods depend on the sea.
"Our fishermen are an essential part of our community, our culture, and our economy. Every day they head out to sea to help put food on the table for many families, and their safety must always remain a priority," the minister said.
The project is part of a broader vision to modernize and strengthen Aruba's fishing sector while promoting safer and more sustainable fishing practices.
The initiative also demonstrates how tourism-generated revenue, with the support of the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA), is being invested in projects that directly benefit the local community.
Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor Wendrick Cicilia emphasized that the successful implementation of the project was made possible through the contributions of many individuals. He expressed his appreciation to Captain Aito, Alex Mansur, and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (DLVV – Santa Rosa), who were also present during the deployment of the FADs.
