ORANJESTAD - In an atmosphere of profound respect, reflection, and cultural pride, the Plataforma Nacional Herencia di Sclavitud Aruba (National Slavery Heritage Platform Aruba - PENHSA), in collaboration with Stichting Rancho, We Culture, and the Comite Conmemoracion Pasado di Sclavitud (Slavery Commemoration Committee), observed National Emancipation Day.
This historic date, July 1st, officially declared a national holiday by the government, brought the community together to honor our ancestors and reflect on the history of slavery and the invaluable worth of freedom.
The commemoration began with an impactful march through the streets of San Nicolas, concluding at the Carnival Village. Prime Minister Mike Eman, alongside community members and various organizations, participated in the ceremony to pay a deep tribute to those who suffered under slavery.
Following the march, the program continued at the Carnival Village with a diverse cultural evening. The audience enjoyed various performances featuring dance, poetry, a traditional tambú group, and music. In addition, there were several food stalls offering local dishes as well as culinary creations inspired by African traditions.
This year’s commemoration emphasized keeping the past alive, honoring our ancestors, and broadening knowledge regarding this vital part of Aruban history. Through this event, respect, equality, and historical awareness are further strengthened within our community.
