DVG provides update on prevailing illnesses in the community
ORANJESTAD — The Department of Public Health (DVG) informs the community that, according to the latest data from our health surveillance system, various illnesses are currently circulating in Aruba.
Specifically, the DVG has registered an increase in cases of fever accompanied by respiratory symptoms. Starting in week 35 (beginning August 24), the number of cases increased—primarily upper respiratory tract infections, as well as pneumonia and bronchitis/bronchiolitis.
By week 38 (September 14 through September 20), respiratory illness activity exceeded the alert level, and the DVG continues to monitor the situation closely.
Over the past 8 weeks, an average of 45 cases of gastroenteritis (stomach and intestinal issues) per week, 18 cases of chicken pox, and an average of 6 cases per week of mosquito-borne illnesses (including dengue) were also registered.
The DVG advises the community to take preventive measures to protect our health and prevent the spread of illness:
- Wash your hands frequently;
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
- Stay home if you are sick;
- Avoid close contact with vulnerable individuals if you are sick;
- Drink plenty of fluids;
- Take your medications as prescribed;
- Remove standing water around your home and protect yourself against mosquito bites.
It is important to seek medical attention if symptoms are severe, worsen, or if there are signs of dehydration or extreme fatigue.
The DVG continues to monitor the situation and will keep the community informed of any significant changes.
