Dutch Minister of Defense: Situation in Venezuela Stable
ORANJESTAD - On January 5, 2026, the Dutch Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans, accompanied by a Dutch defense delegation, paid a working visit to Prime Minister Mike Eman.
During the meeting, the important role of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was discussed, particularly in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the islands that are part of the Kingdom, as well as the responsibilities of the Dutch Ministry of Defense. The Prime Minister emphasized Minister Brekelmans’ role, noting his consistent and active involvement, whether through direct contact or via other key officials within the Ministry of Defense. In recent days, there were tense moments related to the situation in Venezuela, but the protection provided by the Kingdom of the Netherlands has contributed to a sense of calm and security in the Caribbean islands.
The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to Minister Brekelmans for the open and ongoing communication regarding the situation in Venezuela and what may be expected going forward. For the time being, the situation in the region has become calmer, and there is no cause for concern.
Minister Brekelmans thanked the Prime Minister for the meeting and stated that there has been close coordination between the Netherlands and Aruba regarding the situation that occurred on January 3. He emphasized that the situation has since stabilized, that commercial flights in the area have resumed, and that calm has returned. The Dutch Ministry of Defense maintains a clear overview of the situation and indicates that there is no threat to the islands. Should this change, Aruba will be informed promptly, and support will be provided if necessary.
In closing, Prime Minister Eman expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Dick Schoof, who contacted him in the early hours following the military action in Venezuela to convey his solidarity, further contributing to a sense of reassurance.
