Department of Nature and Environment (DNM) Marks World Nature Conservation Day

On this occasion, the Department of Nature and Environment (DNM) issues a call to action to the entire community of Aruba to recognize the critical importance that conserving our natural resources holds for our collective future.

The primary goal of this day is to raise global awareness about the urgent need to protect, preserve, and sustainably manage our planet's natural resources — including our soil, water, air, flora, and fauna. The fundamental principle behind this observance is that a healthy, stable environment forms the foundation of a prosperous, sustainable society and economy.

World Nature Conservation Day serves as a vital call to action. Individuals, community organizations, and government agencies alike are urged to combat the most pressing environmental threats of our time, such as climate change, habitat loss, deforestation, and biodiversity loss.

Origin of the Observance

Unlike official UN observances that stem from a formal resolution, World Nature Conservation Day does not originate from a single founder or official decree. Instead, it was born from a grassroots initiative that expanded globally through international conservation networks and non-governmental environmental movements seeking a dedicated day to highlight resource preservation.

Over time, this initiative has gained formal endorsement from environment ministries, governmental agencies across multiple continents, and international organizations. Every year on July 28, these bodies organize educational campaigns, community events, and environmental initiatives.

As the governmental agency responsible for formulating policies for the management and protection of Aruba's environment and nature, DNM reiterates that protecting our local ecosystems is not solely a task for the government—it is a responsibility shared by all residents of Aruba.
