COVID vaccine available for at-risk groups

ORANJESTAD – For residents who have been waiting for the COVID vaccine, the Department of Public Health (DVG) announces that the vaccine is now available.

Interested parties can call to schedule an appointment.

The COVID virus continues to circulate. Although the virus is considered a respiratory virus within the large group of viruses that affect the respiratory tract, COVID and influenza remain the two most dangerous viruses because they can cause serious complications and even death in at-risk groups in our society.

At-risk groups include:

  • Adults aged 60 and older;
  • Individuals with chronic illnesses or health problems, such as asthma, diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, etc.;
  • Individuals with obesity;
  • Pregnant women.

For the aforementioned at-risk groups, the COVID vaccine is completely free. Individuals under 60 who belong to a at-risk group must present a referral from a general practitioner or specialist and proof of vaccination from the AZV (Association of Health Insurance Holders). Adults aged 60 and older only need to show their AZV card; a referral is not required.

The COVID vaccine is administered only on Wednesdays. An appointment with the DVG is required. You can call 522 4200 for this.

In addition to vaccination against COVID or the flu, it is also important to take preventive measures to avoid infection with respiratory viruses.

These measures include:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer;
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing;
  • Do not go to public places if you feel ill or have symptoms;
  • Avoid direct contact with sick people;
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose, and mouth unnecessarily.
