Complications that can occur after an infection with the measles virus
ORANJESTAD—Some of our community members are at risk of simple or even grave complications due to measles.
These persons are:
- Children younger than 5 years who are not or not adequately vaccinated against measles;
- Individuals with weakened/compromised immune systems;
- Individuals born before 1970 due to lack of immunity;
- Pregnant woman and her unborn baby.
Some common and non-serious complications that can occur as a result of measles include
- Ear inflammation;
- Vomiting with diarrhea.
Some serious or even fatal complications that can occur as a result of measles include:
- Pneumonia;
- Encephalitis;
- Blindness;
- Premature birth.
