Cleanup in Oranjestad's Most Visited Tourist Areas
ORANJESTAD - On February 9, 2026, a team from Serlimar launched a cleanup in one of Oranjestad's most visited tourist areas.
These are Weststraat and Werfstraat, where trash has been piling up, and trees have been growing uncontrollably for some time.
Minister of Justice Dr. Arthur Dowers stated that this situation is unacceptable, especially in an area heavily frequented by tourists on a daily basis. According to the minister, not only is the government responsible for keeping public spaces clean, but shopkeepers also play a vital role in maintaining the areas directly in front of their businesses.
The government invests in various cleaning teams and funds to keep public spaces in good condition. It is unacceptable that, while the government is doing its part, some businesses are failing to take responsibility and even contributing to the street litter problem. The Minister of Justice praises some shopkeepers who keep their premises clean and in good condition, even commissioning beautiful murals on the side of their buildings. Unfortunately, others are not managing their waste properly.
Weststraat and Werfstraat have undergone several positive changes in recent years. Shopkeepers have breathed new life into long-vacant buildings. Several of these commercial spaces, formerly part of a vibrant nightlife district, have now been converted into Airbnb-style accommodations, among other things. Furthermore, thousands of cruise tourists pass through these areas practically every day.
For a country that profiles itself as a five-star tourist destination, the condition of major streets like Weststraat and Werfstraat should reflect a high standard of public space.
Minister Dowers will direct the appropriate authorities to investigate which businesses in the area are improperly managing their waste, and those businesses may face fines under relevant legislation.
Order, cleanliness, and respect for public space are not optional; they are mandatory. We do this to protect our national image and to create a dignified environment for residents and visitors.
