Biography of Frank Martinus Arion to be Presented at the National Library of Aruba
ORANJESTAD — On Monday, October 26, 2026, the National Library of Aruba will host a special evening dedicated to the life and work of Frank Martinus Arion from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.
The event will feature the presentation of his new biography alongside a screening of a documentary detailing his life.
Author Mineke de Vries will be present to introduce her book, titled “Uit baldadig hout ben ik gesneden” (Cut from Rebellious Timber). In the book, Ms. De Vries explores not only the life of Frank Martinus Arion, but also the personal price he paid for social mobility, intellectual ambition, and cultural independence. The celebrated author (1936–2015), originally from Curaçao, earned widespread acclaim within Caribbean and Dutch literature, yet navigated a deeply complex upbringing. Throughout his life, he wrestled with feelings of resentment, guilt, and shame. "I hope his life story illustrates what judgment and oppression can do to a person," stated author Mineke de Vries.
In addition to the book presentation, attendees will view the compelling documentary 'Frank Martinus Arion: The Man, the Woman, the Poem' by the late filmmaker Cindy Kerseborn.
Through this event, the National Library of Aruba, the Department of Culture Aruba, and cultural manager Dr. Mirto Laclé are proud to share a landmark literary and historical work with the Aruban community. Members of the public and enthusiasts of Caribbean literature are cordially invited to attend.
