Bernardo Arévalo sworn in as President of Guatemala
ORANJESTAD - On Monday, January 15, 2024, in the early morning hours, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, on behalf of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, attended the inauguration ceremony of the new President of Guatemala, Mr. Bernardo Arévalo.
The Prime Minister emphasized that it was a great honor to represent Aruba and the Kingdom on such a significant occasion, bidding farewell to the outgoing president, Alejandro Giammanttei, and installing the newly elected president.
The ceremony did not go without challenges due to resistance from the Guatemalan Congress to swear in the new president, even with urgent meetings called by some presidents of other countries.
The Prime Minister, along with the President of Costa Rica, Mr. Rodrigo Chaves Robles, the President of Paraguay, Mr. Santiago Peña, the Prime Minister of Belize, Mr. Johnny Briceño, various ministers, the President of the Organization of American States (OAS), Mr. Luis Almagro, and the representative of the European Union, Mr. Josep Borrell, issued a statement urging the Congress to respect the will of the Guatemalan people, who voted for Bernardo Arévalo with more than 60% in August 2023, and to allow his inauguration to take place.
After a delay of 9 hours, democracy prevailed, and the inauguration ceremony of Guatemala's new President, Bernardo Arévalo, and Vice President Karin Herrera took place.
President Arévalo has an ambitious program to combat corruption and respect human rights. The government of Aruba supports this, and the Prime Minister assured President Arévalo of the support of Aruba and the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands.
"These are significant moments to represent Aruba. When you see everything that is done to prevent a democratically elected president from taking office, you realize how fragile democracy is in some countries in our region. But it also makes you feel even more grateful for the stability and blessings we have in Aruba," said Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes.
