A.T.A. and the University of Aruba Sign Strategic Agreement to Strengthen Education, Research, and Sustainable Development

Through this collaboration, A.T.A. will support the development of the Multidisciplinary Small Island Studies Program, which the University of Aruba is establishing. The program focuses on the unique opportunities and challenges faced by islands such as Aruba. The agreement was signed by Ronella Croes, CEO of A.T.A., and Juri Nicolaas, President of the Board of Trustees and President-Curator of the University of Aruba, in the presence of representatives from both organizations.

The University of Aruba and A.T.A. have long shared a commitment to advancing Aruba’s sustainable development through research, community engagement, and educational opportunities. This new agreement strengthens their existing partnership and expands its impact, with a particular focus on innovation, resilience, digital transformation, good governance, cultural identity, and collaboration between the public and private sectors. Its objective is to place the unique challenges facing Aruba as a small island at the center of research and education.

The agreement focuses on the development and enhancement of a multidisciplinary Small Island Studies Program, which will be housed within the University of Aruba’s Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL). Through this initiative, the university aims to combine continuing education, applied research, and community engagement to better prepare students and professionals for the unique opportunities and challenges of island communities such as Aruba.

The program will offer professional development courses and certificate programs covering topics that are critical to small island communities, including innovation, entrepreneurship, resilience, digital transformation, and good governance. It will also integrate academic instruction with research and hands-on projects, providing students and professionals with practical experience in addressing the social and economic challenges facing Aruba. In addition, the program will position Aruba as a recognized knowledge hub for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) while promoting the exchange of expertise, relevant research, and regional collaboration.

The agreement aligns with A.T.A.’s strategic priorities, including strengthening education, preparing Aruba’s future workforce, promoting data-driven innovation, and contributing to a more responsible and sustainable tourism economy. By fostering stronger connections among academia, government, and the private sector, the Small Island Studies Program creates new opportunities for research, innovation, and economic development that benefit Aruba.
