Aruba strengthens cybersecurity in the aviation sector.

This is an old post.

ORANJESTAD - To defend the Aruban civil aviation industry against cyberattacks, the Ministry of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Elderly Affairs has taken a significant step.

It formed a working group to create a cyber security strategy tailored to the aviation industry that complies with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The aviation industry is becoming more dependent on information and communication technology, making data confidentiality and integrity crucial. Aruba must have a solid cyber threat defense plan to ensure civil aviation safety and continuity.

The working group aims to:

  • Develop a National Cyber Security Strategy specifically for Aruban civil aviation, according to the ICAO Annex 17 rule and the guidance in relevant ICAO documents;
  • Evaluate existing security measures and detect discrepancies or risks in the current system;
  • Formulate recommendations for management that align with the Beijing Convention and other relevant international agreements.

The working group will ensure that the work aligns with Aruba's national strategy and ICAO's strategy on cybersecurity. The working group consists of several essential departments with expertise in aviation and the issue of cybersecurity. The group may also call on experts from other agencies to provide additional advice and guidance. The group will hold monthly meetings and submit a progress report every three months to the minister in charge. By year's end, the completed plan should be available.

“Aviation cybersecurity is a national security issue, and we need to develop this plan to safeguard travelers and vital infrastructure. Aruba is taking decisive action to defend our airspace and combat threats,”    Minister of Transport, Integrity, Nature, and Senior Affairs Ursell Arends emphasizes.

The Government of Aruba is committed to following international standards and strengthening security to maintain Aruba as a safe and reliable destination.
