Aruba Celebrates International Biodiversity Day 2025: "In Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development" is the message.

ORANJESTAD - With a focus on the necessary balance between our environment and our progress, Aruba is preparing to celebrate International Biodiversity Day on May 22, 2025, with the proposed theme, “In Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.

With the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), two such universal plans can achieve unity for the newly adopted Pact of the Future. The Directie Natuur en Milieu (DNM) joins the commitments with a special focus on addressing climate change issues and efforts to conserve sustainable resources. The pact of the future is for global transformation to renew the commitment to human progress.

This year's theme serves as a clear call to action for Aruba. As a small island, we are extremely dependent on our natural wealth, from our vibrant coral reefs, sites of historical cultural value, endemic flora and fauna, and diverse landscapes. This unique biodiversity is a source for us to enjoy our sights and recreate and the foundation of our economy that depends on tourism and protects us against the effects of climate change.

DNM reiterates that "International Biodiversity Day is an important moment for us to stop and reflect on the intrinsic value of our nature and how this integrates with our aspirations for sustainable development. The goals of the 2030 Agenda and the KMGBF are not simply international objectives; they are to make the world healthier and more prosperous for future generations."

Aruba manifests its commitment to these goals in its continuous efforts to protect natural areas, promote sustainable resource management, and stimulate scientific research to gain a deeper insight into our ecosystem. The focus on "Harmony with Nature," means that we must see conservation not as an obstacle to development but as the engine that drives clever and resilient growth to continue.

To achieve these goals, nations should coordinate their efforts via the recently adopted Compact for the Future. In Aruba's case, this means increasing national cooperation between agencies, organizations, and international partners, sharing information and best practices, and raising money to support projects that improve our environment and society.

On May 22, do an activity in harmony with nature and share your experience with others to help raise public awareness. Everyone can encourage active participation in conservation efforts. Activities include, for example, tree-planting sessions, an educational lecture at school, a beach clean-up activity, a presentation about local biodiversity, or exhibitions of nature photographs. We invite all citizens of Aruba to join us in celebrating the richness of our biodiversity and renewing our commitment to a sustainable future. Together, we can ensure that Aruba remains an example of living in harmony with nature while supporting sustainable development.
