Aruba and Colombia Reaffirm Strong Friendship During Colombia's Independence Day Celebration

The event was attended by representatives from Aruba and Colombia, members of the Colombian community, special guests, media, and members of the public.

The ceremony commenced with the playing of the national anthems of Aruba and Colombia. Following the anthems, the President of the Parliament of Aruba, Marlon Sneek; Prime Minister Mike Eman; Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor, Wendrick Cicilia; and the Colombian Consul to Aruba, Gustavo Serrano Amaya, delivered official remarks. The program continued with various cultural performances highlighting the richness of Colombian music, dance, and traditions.

Values of Freedom and Historic Ties

In his address, Mr. Sneek emphasized that Colombian independence represents the values of freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. He expressed his appreciation for the vital daily contributions of the Colombian community to the economic, social, and cultural development of Aruba. He also underscored that Aruba and Colombia share a strong bond rooted in friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation.

In his speech, Prime Minister Eman reflected on the true meaning of independence. He stated that freedom is not the end of a process, but the beginning of a shared responsibility to build a more just country where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

The Prime Minister recalled that the relationship between Aruba and Colombia predates the establishment of modern nation-states. Since the time of the Caribbean's earliest inhabitants, the ocean has served as a unifying bridge, enabling trade, exchange, and connection across different cultures. That historical bond endures today through strong human, economic, and cultural connections between both peoples. He expressed deep gratitude to the Colombian community, whose talent, knowledge, and dedication across healthcare, construction, commerce, education, and numerous other sectors drive the island’s progress.

Cooperation and Air Connectivity

Minister Cicilia highlighted that Aruba and Colombia share a deep relationship built on cooperation, friendship, and trust. He noted that thousands of Colombians have chosen Aruba as their home and have become an indispensable part of the local community. He also pointed to the strong connection facilitated by direct flights to several Colombian cities, which strengthens tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. He reaffirmed the Aruban government's commitment to building a society where everyone who calls Aruba home can thrive with access to opportunities, safety, and a high quality of life.

200 Years of Diplomatic Relations

The Colombian Consul to Aruba, Gustavo Serrano Amaya, reflected on the history of Colombian independence and the sacrifices of those who made the birth of a free and sovereign nation possible. He emphasized that freedom is continuously reinforced through democracy, justice, respect for human rights, and a commitment to the common good.

Consul Serrano Amaya also noted that this year's celebration coincides with the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Colombia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands—a relationship founded on dialogue, mutual respect, collaboration, and exchange in areas such as trade, culture, education, sustainable development, and security. He expressed particular gratitude to the government and people of Aruba for their warm welcome of the Colombian community.

Special Visit by Naval Vessel

One of the highlights of the celebration was the presence of the vessel ARC 24 de Julio from the Colombian Navy. This modern vessel, built entirely in Colombia, selected Aruba as its first international destination, making the visit a powerful symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Following the official proceedings, attendees enjoyed a diverse cultural program featuring traditional music, a folklore group, urban dance, poetry, and artistic performances showcasing Colombia's rich heritage.

Through this celebration, Aruba and Colombia have once again reaffirmed their strong bond of friendship, cooperation, and mutual respect, as well as their shared commitment to strengthening the historical and human ties that benefit both communities for generations to come.
