Aruba Aims to Become a Biosphere Reserve
ORANJESTAD - In the presence of the Governor of Aruba, His Excellency Alfonso Boekhoudt, and a group of stakeholders, UNESCO hosted a Training Workshop for the Co-Construction of a Biosphere Reserve in Aruba at JOIA Aruba by Iberostar.
The session opened with remarks from Prime Minister Mike Eman, who outlined his vision for an Aruba that successfully combines economic growth with environmental protection.
“The greatest challenge for Aruba’s future is finding a way to continue growing our economy while safeguarding our environment,” Prime Minister Eman stated. “It is clear that we cannot maintain the same pace and direction of development. Now is the time to pause, reflect, and embrace a balanced approach that serves both our people and our natural surroundings.”
The government has already initiated strategic dialogue with the hospitality industry and community stakeholders, sharing its vision and goals for a sustainable future. The plan to establish a biosphere reserve around parts of Aruba, Eman emphasized, should ideally expand to encompass the entire island, positioning Aruba as a Caribbean leader in sustainability and a model for harmonizing progress with environmental stewardship.
Referencing Aruba’s recognition as a UNESCO Center of Excellence in Sustainable Energy Transition, Prime Minister Eman encouraged the community to think beyond immediate interests. “We must look beyond today’s desires and consider the legacy we want to leave for future generations. It is the time to put aside personal ambitions and unite behind a shared vision for Aruba’s future,” he said.
As a tangible step toward this vision, the Government of Aruba has announced a reforestation plan to plant 100,000 trees across the island. This initiative is guided by a comprehensive report from Wageningen University, which has provided a blueprint for action.
“Aruba stands at a crossroads,” Prime Minister Eman concluded. “We can either continue following the growth model of the past or come together to create a legacy of sustainability that will inspire generations to come.”
