ARC Gloria: Ambassador of Colombia at Sea
ORANJESTAD—Sunday morning, August 3, 2025, the ship ARC Gloria entered the port of Aruba.
Prime Minister mr. Mike Eman, Minister. Wendrick Cicilia, Minister drs. Rene Herdé, together with the Consul of Colombia in Aruba, Mr. Gustavo Serrano Amaya, and the Ambassador of Colombia to the Netherlands, Mrs. Carolina Olarte Bácares, witnessed the masterful arrival of the Buque ARC Gloria.
The Prime Minister, together with the naval captain, Luis Fernando Lara Cogollo, boarded, and with a ceremonial cannon salute, the Prime Minister made an inspection of the staff's weapons. Then, together with the delegation, they entered the "Officer's Wardroom," where the captain provided an explanation of their task on the ship.
ARC Gloria is a floating symbol of Colombian pride, tradition, and friendship to the world. With its large sails and elegant figure, it is one of the most admired boats wherever it goes. Behind its beauty lies a purpose: to train future naval officers and represent Colombia on the international stage.
Since its launch in 1968, ARC Gloria has sailed to more than 77 countries, stopping in nearly 200 ports worldwide. Wherever he goes, he carries a message of peace, discipline, and Colombian culture.
It has two principal roles:
- As a training boat, naval cadets learn practical skills in navigation, teamwork, and leadership.
- As Colombia's maritime ambassador, he proudly raises the national flag, which is the largest flag raised on a sailing boat!
Gloria is a tall ship, with three large masts and more than 20 sails. Although it has an engine, it regularly sails on wind power, like old boats from the last century.
Each year, around 70 young cadets board Gloria for a long sea voyage. They learn to sail, dock, and handle emergency management and boat handling. It is a challenging experience, but it builds strong character and creates lasting memories.
This visit is a symbol of the strong relationship and friendship between Aruba and Colombia.
