Law for the National Statistical System of Aruba (NSS) completed
ORANJESTAD - On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Council of Ministers, at the request of Minister of Economic Affairs Geoffrey Wever, approved the new law for Aruba to have a National Statistical System (NSS).
After approval, the new law establishing Aruba's National Statistical System will now be sent to the Advisory Council. Aruba did not have a National Statistical System, but with this law, the official statistics production on different areas for a well-informed audience with high-quality data becomes possible.
A National Statistical System is essential for the sustainable development of a country and is an indispensable element in the information system of a democratic society. It is crucial for the government, economy, and the national and international public to produce statistical data on the economic, demographic, social, and environmental situation. Official statistics must meet international requirements relating to the relevance, reliability, currentness, and practical use of the data produced. The data must also be made public impartially and understandably. Now it is possible with the National Statistics System Act. It will work in a participatory manner to identify the official statistics necessary for Aruba.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs' management vision and the Landspakket Aruba include the implementation of the National Statistical System of Aruba.
The need to develop a National Statistical System in Aruba has also been highlighted by various previous studies conducted by international organizations like the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.
The National Statistical System is a cooperation between the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and other official statistics producers in the government apparatus that aims to ensure the production of a wide variety of high-quality, relevant, and current official statistics to form the basis of policy formulation and evaluation and of sustainable development.
Through Landspakket, the Aruba and Netherlands governments collaborated to provide funding for the National Statistical System (NSS) implementation. Aruba also received technical assistance from the United Nations Statistical Division (UNSD).
After the law's approval in the Parliament of Aruba, CBS will be responsible for coordinating the operation of the NSS. The NSS is not only for the government but also provides information to Parliament so that Parliament can exercise its primary job of controlling the government. The NSS is also beneficial for the private sector, academics, and the general public to make decisions in their area of interest.
